Thailand marked a major cultural achievement in July 2026 . . .

. . . as Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, it becomes Thailand’s ninth World Heritage Site and the first in southern Thailand.

UNESCO recognized the site for showcasing the historic blending of Brahmanical, Hindu, Mahayana Buddhist, and Theravada Buddhist traditions across Central and Southeast Asia. It has profoundly influenced the region's religious architecture, art, and cultural heritage.

The temple also reflects artistic and religious exchanges with India's Nalanda tradition, Central Java, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar's Mon culture—traditions that later shaped sacred sites throughout Thailand, Malaysia, and beyond.

As the spiritual heart of Nakhon Si Thammarat, the temple remains a living centre of worship and cultural heritage. UNESCO also recognized its enduring connection to local traditions, including the celebrated Nora dance, legends, and its lasting inspiration for religious communities across Thailand and Southeast Asia.
